| 2. Encounter an Alligator | ||
|
You’ll see adult alligators that average ten to 14 feet, juveniles two to four feet long, and babies under two feet long. Just imagine the excitement of watching within close proximity as these amazing reptiles dive from the banks, swim with their babies, or play hide and seek with the boat. This is an adventure every family who visits Hilton Head should experience. Outside Hilton Head (800-686-6996) will take you on a leisurely kayak tour through the black waters of the New River. The experienced staff of naturalists, several of whom hold advanced degrees, will detail facts about the wildlife and the surrounding area, with special focus on the American alligator and its behavior. This is an easy paddle that meanders through rich Tupelo and Sweet Gum swampland. It departs from New River Landing, Hwy. 46/SC-170. This is a wonderful outing for young and old alike, and no experience is necessary. For more information, see our Ad Directory under Alligator Tours. Also see “Thing To Do” #1 and #29.
