|
The plantation encompasses almost 4,000 acres, houses about 8,000 full-time residents, and features two nature conservancies (Whooping Crane and Cypress), over six miles of biking trails, the Seabrook Farms for gardening, the 250-slip Skull Creek Marina, the Old Fort Pub and historic Fort Mitchell, two miles of lovely beaches on Port Royal Sound, twelve tennis courts, and four golf courses. Of the four golf courses, one is public, one is semi-private and two are private. All offer spectacular play amid some of the Island’s most beautiful scenery. Country Club of Hilton Head The Country Club of Hilton Head (843-681-4653), a four-star, par-72 semi-private course, is host to the U.S. Open Qualifier Tournament and is selected by a number of organizations for their tournaments. It was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1986. The course features two par-five holes that exceed 575 yards. This golf club has both resident and non-resident memberships. Many vacationers returning every year to the Island are allowed non-resident membership. All members are allowed full use of all the amenities including a snack bar by the outdoor pool (they also have an indoor pool) and two beautifully appointed dining rooms on the second floor of this formal building. Day guests must be accompanied by a member. The club offers a fully stocked pro shop. Anyone may contact a head professional who is available for lessons. The golf course is open all year. Featured amenities include beverage cart services, a practice driving range, putting green, and chipping and bunker green. Full-service locker room facilities are also available. The club also boasts six tennis courts as well as a weight room and aerobics studio. Oyster Reef Golf Club Oyster Reef Golf Club (843-681-1745) opened in 1982 and has been named among one of the top 25 new courses in America. This is Hilton Head Plantation’s only public course and is one of the American Golf Club Courses. The Rees Jones course’s signature hole is the 160-yard, par-three sixth with a green that commands a spectacular view of Port Royal Sound. The course is noted for its numerous bunkers, dog-legs and water hazards. Inside their clubhouse is a wonderfully stocked pro shop, ladies’ and men’s locker rooms, a grill, and an informal lounge. The back wall is lined with glass for a view of their grounds. The club has two head pros available for lessons. Photo courtesy of Country Club of Hilton Head |
