|
The sport originated in the mid-19th Century in the British Isles. In the United States, it has been popular for well-over 100 years as a sport that could be played on rough turf with inexpensive equipment. Croquet’s appeal suffered a setback in the 1890’s when the clergy railed against it because the game was associated with drinking, gambling, and wicked behavior. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that it once again became fashionable, primarily among the elite and famous literary figures. If you are looking for something different to do with your group, a full-sized croquet court is open to visitors year around. This court is for six-wicket “sport” croquet, not the nine-wicket “game” version that we play with the kids in the backyard. Located adjacent to the Pro Shop at the Port Royal Clubhouse, this groomed Bermuda lawn court is used by the Port Royal Croquet Club and is the site of sanctioned United States Croquet Association (USCA) tournaments. The court has been recognized by the USCA as one of the best in the country. You can arrange to attend free six-wicket instructional clinics that are held Monday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. (appointments are required). A member of the Port Royal Croquet Club will play right along with you as they teach you the finer points of the sport. For more information, call 843-681-1700 and ask for Ted Sullivan.
