Company's Description:

"Imagine the thrill of being handed 300 acres of beautifully treed rich Carolina bottom land and being told to 'Give it your best shot!' As you'll see, we did just that. Now it's your turn."

"Hilton Head National is my promise to you of an enjoyable golf experience." - Gary Player

Hilton Head National opened its doors officially on November 1, 1989. The course is a Gary Player design and incorporates many of Gary's philosophies on golf course layout. Gary stresses that while golf courses should be challenging, they should not punish unduly.

Hilton Head National is indeed, Gary Player’s kind of golf. First, there’s lots of it, 27-holes in three unique, yet equally challenging nines.

If golf’s what brought you to the Lowcountry, you’d be remiss to miss Hilton Head National’s commitment to golf, pure golf, that has made it one of the most enjoyable links experiences in this golf-crazy region.

The "National" Nine

The “National” nine begins with three increasingly-longer par-4’s to get you started, #3 a great 420+ from the two back tees with water down the entire left side on the drive (around a slight dogleg left) with trees encroaching on the bail-out area to the right. The long-iron approach must negotiate four mounds into the smallish green. The fourth, a middle-length par-3 seems benign enough on the scorecard, but from the elevated tee you’d better not miss the well-bunkered table-top green.

You might feel like you need to call in Henry Kissinger to negotiate the huge waste bunker in front of the par-4 fifth, the large greenside bunker in front of the par-3 sixth and the old oak that sits in front of the par-5 seventh, the National’s #1 handicapped hole.

The ninth might actually be the toughest, though, with deep marsh all along the right side of a narrow fairway and right next to another elevated “table-top” green it actually shares with #9 on the Player layout.

The "Player" Nine

If you follow the “National” with the “Player” nine hole course, and even if you start with the Player, your fun has just begun. After possibly the most severe plateau on the whole layout awaiting your approach to the green on Player #1, you’ve got to make possibly your most important on-course decision at the driveable par-4 second. The second-best risk/reward hole on the course (to the Weed’s signature #6), Player #2 is only 294 yards from the tips, with the prevailing southerly wind at your back. The smart play is your longest controllable iron to the narrow but flat “runway” and then a short pitch to the green, but imagine the story you’ll tell about driving the green and holing the eagle putt!

The par-5 sixth also requires that you know your game and its limitations. The sharp dogleg right is reachable in two, IF you can cut the corner off the tee and IF you can carry a pond right in front of the green. IF you can, birdie (or better) is yours. IF you can’t? Then there’s the par-3 eighth, which you can play from 125-175 yards, depending on which of SEVEN different tee positions you choose, but all of it is over water.

The "Weed" Nine

The Weed nine hole golf course is a perfect complement to the Player designs. His layout also offers plenty of run-up opportunities to his greens, which are generally a little larger than Player’s, but with more severe undulations. The par-3 fourth requires a carry over a waste bunker that takes up most of the yardage between tee and green. But it’s the signature sixth that’ll give you stories to tell, or explanations to make. Again under 300 yards from the tips, just 250-275 from the middle tees, its one of Bobby Weed’s ultimate risk/reward opportunities. The largest lake on the entire course runs down the entire right side, then wraps around behind the green while pot bunkers and the course’s largest berm rise up to snatch shots hit left or short. Miss the pin by 10 yards right or left and you’re cooked more than the delicious hot dog you got from the friendly cart attendant. That shortest par-4 at Hilton Head National is followed by the shortest par-3, a do-or-die 102-138 yarder over more pristine marshland.
